Dog grooming courses may also focus on the care of a particular breed of dogs, and it is important to take courses which span a variety of breeds to learn about special needs.

For those who want to start a dog grooming or pet sitting business, dog grooming courses which provide basic information about running a business may be helpful. These courses should include a discussion of how to start a business, along with classes in topics related to administrating and managing a business, so that students are familiar with information which they will need as they run their businesses.

Dog Grooming Training

Dog grooming is a fantastic way to make money from home at your own speed. As businesses go the initial outlay is very modest to get started. Did you know that the price owners pay to have a small dog groomed (here in Auckland) generally starts at $55.00. Imagine working from home, earning money whilst doing something enjoyable and working from a diary so you choose your days off.

Why is dog grooming so important? To ensure good dog health, brushing and combing the hair helps in removing dead hair and dirt from the coat. Grooming dogs on a regular basis helps prevent hair matting, keeps their coat shinier, and stimulates proper blood supply to the skin. Many dog owners and pet lovers are taking dog grooming training courses to learn the techniques.

Whether you wish to learn the grooming techniques for your own dog or wish to turn your hobby into a means of making money, grooming a dog gives you an opportunity to bond with them. Starting from an early age, the dog grooming training tips will show your furry friends how attentive and affectionate you are towards them. Plus, using good quality dog grooming tools like brush, comb, nail clippers, and toothbrush guarantees your pooch to be ultra healthy. There are also special dog grooming equipments like cages, dryers, tables, faucets, tubs, grooming arms, and pet steps (ramps) which are used for proper dog care.

Pet groomers must have a high school diploma or equivalent. To prepare for a pet grooming career, new groomers can enter a grooming apprenticeship or enroll in a state-approved dog grooming school. Groomers typically choose an apprenticeship in order to gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience. Apprenticeships last one year and allow groomers to work under the close supervision of a more experienced groomer.

Pet groomers should be able to safely handle and transport animals, provide appearance care and successfully communicate with animal owners. They must have strong customer service and clerical skills in order to answer phones, schedule appointments and relay important animal health information to clients. Above all, pet groomers should have a passion for working with animals.

Without proper training and stimulation your dog can quickly become:

* A bossy, obnoxious, hyperactive, destructive delinquent
* A shy, neurotic, withdrawn, fearful mess
* An anti-social, aggressive, potentially dangerous menace

To be able to function properly dogs of all ages and sizes require the following:

* Good Leadership and Communication Group of 3 Dogs
* Physical and Mental Exercise
* Good Healthcare and Nutrition

Most dogs no matter what breed they are will love learning new tricks and because dogs react well to a reward system they will behave in a way that gets them rewards and treats every time. The most difficult part of any training course is getting your dog to understand what you expect from them. Basic dog training will involve simple commands such as sit, down, come stay, close and heel. You will teach your dog quicker if you reward him for good behavior, and a reward scheme or system is ideal.

You should never use force or violence on your dog, they will not understand and the training will be pointless. Praising and rewarding your dog will see faster results, and teach your dog to be better in new environments. The ideal time for you to take your dog to training courses, is when they are a puppy. Basic commands can be taught from as young as 8 weeks old, but usually your dog will need its 4 month vaccinations to join a training course. You can however start the training at home so that you lay the ground work before joining a class.

Types of Dog Training Courses

Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Rewards consist of praise and petting as well as treats. Treats are especially used in the early learning stages of a new behavior.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker which, oddly enough, makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Dog Whispering: Dog Whispering is more of a general philosophy than a method. This is a more advanced method that should taken on by dog lovers who feel very confident in their connection with their dogs and are interested in learning about canine behaviors, motivation and body language.

Dog Grooming Tips

Grooming dogs can take a little bit of practice. You can always take your dog to a pet store or a groomer rather than attempt it yourself, but you can do it at home too. Basic dog grooming equipment includes dog shampoo, nail clippers and a comb or brush for the fur. Reliable dog grooming information is available through a veterinarian, in books or on the Web.

Be sure to find dog grooming instructions related to the specific breed and coat type of your dog. Some dogs will require more care than others. Short-haired breeds may require less in the way of dog grooming supplies than long-haired breeds, but all dogs can benefit from a basic grooming session performed on a regular basis. Grooming can be a bonding experience for both owner and pet, and it keeps your dog looking great.

There are some simple tips you can follow to make it all that much easier:

- Get them started young: start regular grooming sessions when they are just a puppy to get them accustomed to being groomed. Ensure you regularly handle their ears and paws as these are often trouble spots later in life.
- Start with shorter grooming sessions and reassure/reward them often.
- Choose a grooming time when they are most likely to be relaxed such as after a meal or a long walk.
- Take note of where your dog likes to be combed and brushed (usually their tummies) and focus on these areas to turn grooming into their special treat.
- Give them a treat after each grooming session to reward good behaviour.

Shaving a dog in the hot summer months is thought to keep them cooler. But hair on the dog works two ways; keeping the dog warm in the cold, and serving to protect against heat and sunburn. Shaving a dog completely is not necessary. If your dog has a thick undercoat, good lucking finding a pair of clippers to do the job.
Brushing your dog

Start at the head and follow the flow of the hair. Pay special attention to behind the ears, and the base of the tail. These areas tend to get overlooked. Fleas gather there. Mats tend to form on the chest, flanks and near the tail. In the winter, pay special attention to the feet. Check the pads for cracking or sores.

Keep flea and tick treatments on your dog especially on outdoor dogs. Be sure that the treatment is safe. Before using an over-the-counter product on your dog call your veterinarian.

Properly done, grooming your dog need not be a chore and can be a lot of fun. Bathing your dog is an opportunity to bond. It is an intimate moment between you and your dog. It is a moment to show him or her how much you care; to feel their skin and make sure everything is all right with them. Ideally, you’ll start bathing your dog as a puppy. Be gentle, but lather and rub dirty areas as needed, as you might do on your own body. Don't rush the animal through the experience. Take your time in properly lathering and let the shampoo sit for a few minutes in order to let the natural oils sink into the coat. When bathing, care should always be taken to thoroughly rinse all traces of shampoo to prevent skin irritations. Care should also be taken to prevent water from getting into the ear canal or nose, while also preventing any products from getting into the dog's eyes.
